a little credit for the year 2003

everybody does it. magazines, websites, tv channels, papers, all kind of people around the world. so i thought i would do it too, a version of mine. warning though, this is entirely my own opinion. and if you don't agree, then, well, make your own version. to be honest i'm bad at reviewing, instead here i'm just noting what i think about them, but not actually reviewing them. that's why i don't see them as 'the best of' because it's very relative. so. these are, the CDs that deserve a good ovation - for they have been entertaining my ears very well - of the year 2003:

[+] the strokes - room on fire
you know this one's impossible to be missed. if it's not greater than their 2001's is this it, it's at least as good as the previous. i can't even choose which songs from this album that would be my favorite, because all of them are! well, maybe i can. reptilia is just simply irresistable. i dig this song. 12:51 too, and meet me in the bathroom. oh damn it, i like all of them, i can't even skip any song if i put this CD in my player. this album, is just simply, superb. superb. period. @

[+] late night tales - jamiroquai
the songs in this version of the late night tales series are compiled and commented by jay kay himself. if you listen to this, you'll be surprised that you have a great taste of music. and i'm being serious! of course, there's marvin gaye, and johnny hammond. but i guarantee, you won't be able to resist the commodores' girl, i think the world about you or kleeer's tonight's the night. and if you listen carefully to leon ware's what's your name, you will notice how jay kay got his style. basically, you will find the taste of funk and soul of the 70's and early 80's, and inevitably, jamiroquai's roots. pure funk, soul, and a little bit of jazz. @

[+] red hot chilli peppers - greatest hits
i was never really into rhcp, well, at least until i bought their greatest hits. listening to all their hits that i'd probably heard many times before through radio or mtv, i just realized how good they really are. and it's worth to note how they're getting better everytime, you can tell by their previously unreleased save the population. besides, it's nice to hear their voice again. @

[+] john mayer - heavier things
he is what i called, a very, very talented musician (along with chris carabba, dave matthews, ben folds, billy corgan, rivers cuomo, brandon boyd, jarvis cocker, thom yorke, duncann sheik, damon albarn, and others). although i personally like his first album (room for squares) better, nonetheless this album had confirmed him as what i've mentioned. clarity and home life are my favorite tracks, although you couldn't really tell because the songs are perfect for every mood. @

[+] dave matthews band - the central park concert (triple CD)
i am without any doubt whatsoever envy those bastards who were lucky enough to saw the real concert, live!! aaarrrggghhh!!! the concert, even though i could only enjoy it from this triple CD box, was, *sigh*, i would say, the best concert of the year! there. yes, i said 'the best'. don't believe me? buy the CD yourself! or better, turn back time and go to NYC and watch it by yourself! and you should go with me, because i didn't see it either! @

[+] counting crows - films about ghosts - the best of...
one good thing about buying a greatest hits compilation of a band is that you already knew the songs, and so you won't be dissapointed like when you're buying their regular albums. and this CD, i guess, represents what i've just said. and it's counting crows. classic. @

[+] the alternative album
there's doves' catch the sun. there's supergrass' pumping on your stereo. there's idlewild's when i argue i see shapes. there's placebo's you don't care about us. there are starsailor, the vines, the dandy warhols, hell is for heroes, and black rebel motorcycle club. need i say more? @

:: other CDs that missed the hall of fame:
* the chemical brothers - singles 93-03 (double CD)
they're great. especially during their times. apparently their time is over now.
* ministry of sound - the chillout session - summer collection 2003 (double CD)
nice, but i prefer smooth music's 2002's the chillout session. disc 2.
* zwan - mary stars of the sea
you see, this is billy corgan. this is a very great album. but i miss smashing pumpkins. a lot.
* les nubians - one step forward
i must say, their first album (princesses nubienness) is so much better than this one. it's great, but too world music for me.
* dashboard confessional - swiss army romance and a mark. a mission. a brand. a scar.
i heard both of them are good. too bad i haven't bought both of them, so i can't judge something that i haven't actually listen to, right? ::

late night tales

[+] tale #1

the theme: awesome movies, free beers and good korean food

the set: downtown victoria. the block across odeon theatre and famous players theatre. 30 minutes bus distance from where i live (or an hour if i take the bus that goes to my campus first). four months after i first came to canada. one day before i went nowhere and put my lazy ass mostly in the house all day long. ten minutes after two awesome, awesome, awesome movies. 10.45 pm. a korean businessman (kb), a korean friend (kf), and a spoiled brat (me).

the story: yes, i finally made myself watched two great, great, great movies with my friend, in two different theatre (although they're just one block away) in one day. the last samurai and the lord of the ring's the return of the king. I would be glad to share the movies, but they're not what this tale's about. it's about what happened after we watched those movies. when we walked down the road on yates street, still in a deep conversation about the movies we'd just watched, when suddenly a guy ask something in an odd language to my friend. he answered using that language too, so i supposed the guy's a korean as well. they then had a conversation using that language, and sometimes the guy used english too and looked at me. then we had a conversation:

[kb]: so do you guys just watched some movies?
[kf and me]: yeah.. (confused)
[kb]: good. ok, suppose sometimes later on you just watch a movie again, and then you passed over here, you heard nice music from the inside of a restaurant, a korean restaurant, and you haven't had your lunch or dinner. Would you come in?
[kf]: most probably yeah..
[me]: well it depends..
[kb]: depends on what?
[me]: depends on whether it's expensive or not, and the atmosphere, and.. (lost words)
[kb]: yeah, we have to maintain the price, but the atmosphere is really good, and the food are good, definitely. so would you come?
[me]: maybe..
[kb]: ok. i'm gonna open a korean restaurant right over here. (pointing at the store in front of us where we'd been standing). i already have three of them at vancouver, and i'm gonna open a branch just right here. i believe this is a great place, people who just watched movies like you guys should be interested, and that's way i'm freezing my ass right now in the middle of the night, doing a research to find out about our potential customers just like you guys right now.
[kf]: that sounds great. they don't really have good korean restaurant in this city, you know?
[kb]: really? well, I'm pretty sure ours will be great. We will have.. (he listed down korean food names of which i couldn't even pronounce them, let alone remember them). they are great. for the music, at night we will play jazz, do you like jazz?
[me]: (almost shrieked) yes!
[kb]: yes, so we will have some jazz at night and maybe techno during the day, so we will have a slow down atmosphere over here. right now we will set everything into place and by late february we will open.
[me]: that's fast.
[kb]: yeah, but we already bought this place, and the setting shouldn't take too long. so my name is peter. and i will remember your face and the three of us having this conversation, make sure when we open the restaurant on February you will come by and look for me, and I will buy you guys some beers. how bout that?
[kf]: (in an instance) sure! We'll come by!
[me]: ok. sounds good too me! (grinning)

well there's one restaurant owner tried to promote his supposed-to-be cool new branch to us, but the thought of having some free beers on two months time really hitched us good. i'll look forward for that. :)

[+] tale #2

the theme: grown-up madness

the set: two days before christmas. one day after i watch the last samurai and lotr's the return of the king. three hours after i was labored to help the mad grown-up re-arrange his used-to-be nice and cozy living room into a total angle disaster kinda tv room. two and a half hour before i start writing this post. a house somewhere in the gordon head area, about 45 minutes walking distance or 30 minutes bus distance (because i have to take two different buses) from my campus, uvic. 9.30 pm. a mad man (mm), a mad grandma (mg)and a spoiled brat (me).

the story: for a little introduction, in case you haven't know yet, i rent a room in a house and share everything with the house's owner, this 42-year-old childless not-so-good-relations-with-women (i heard stories) love-to-hang-out and stressed divorcee. apparently he's a good son too (well, at least partly), for he has been letting his own 80+ mother from kingston, ontario to stay in the house during this christmas period since the 15th until the 28th. you've heard part of their morning rituals before. so anyway, i was just peacefully sitting on my lazy couch in my warm room reading dave eggers' you shall know our velocity! with full concentration when suddenly i heard funny noises and screams came from outside of my room. curious, i put down my book and took a look outside the door, wondering what the hell was going on. and here's what was going on, more or less:

[mm]: (excited as hell) i still can't believe i did it! woo hoo!!! my first time ever!!
[mg]: (laughing) oh boy, oh yes you did.. (shrug)
[mm]: (still under uncontrolled excitement) you know what? we should take a picture of this moment! yeah!! i'm gonna take my camera in the garage!! oh, i still can't believe this!! (walked enthusiastically to the front door and just realised that i've been watching them from my door looking puzzled)
[mm]: oh, emil! (grabbed front door's key) you just have no idea what had just happened! i won!! for the first time in my life, i can beat her (pointed at his mother) in scrabble! it's just too good to be true!! woo hoo!! (laughing uncontrollably) i just need to take a picture of this! i'll go get the camera and you'll take the picture, ok? (opened the front door and went to the garage)
[me]: (still puzzled and thought, wth? you win a scrabble game and behave like a mad man? get a life!) oh, ok then (tried to smile)
[mg]: oh, dear, he just won this scrabble game, have you ever played scrabble before, emil? he scored (she mentioned a score) and i only scored (she mentioned a lower score). and this is the first time he did it. (laughing)
[me]: (grinning and laughing too) yes i had. oh wow.. (tried to look impressed)
[mm]: (came abruptly from outside the house with a polaroid camera) ah! here it is! woo hoo!! i just still can't believe it! i won!! i won the game!! (screaming and shouting in a very annoying sorta way because he kept moving around us) my first, first time beating you!! (pointed at mg again) i kicked your butt!! i won!! (made a funny dance and thumping his feet repeatedly on the floor)
[mg]: (her smile faded) yes you won but that's not a polite way to say it. i'm still your mother..
[mm]: ok, i won. (tried to calm himself down) i won!! and you lose!! (seemed like he failed) woo hoo!! ok, ok, emil, so here's what you do, take a picture of us using this.. (handed me the camera) mmm.. (took the winning scrabble with him) ..over here! (walked his way in front of the fireplace) come on, mom, come over here!
[mg]: (shaking her head and smiling) ok, dear. (walked toward him)
[mm]: make your face look sad, mom, ok? (grinning and smiling widely)
[me]: (laughing)
[mg]: i can't.. i always smile when someone taking a picture of me (tried to frown but failed, instead smiling even wider)
[mm]: just tried to look sad mom. ok emil! (holding the scrabble game with a total pride)
[me]: ok, one.. two... (click!) (laughing again)
[mm]: thanks emil. oh.. my first time!! ever!!! i finally won!! woo hoo!! (did the silly dance again)

and so it went. even after i came back to my room i could still hear him screaming in disbelief and thumping his feet to the floor repeatedly. their enthusiasm faded after 20 minutes more or less, but then repeated when mg went to the bed and tried to sleep. if i'm not mistaken, i even heard that mm's going to frame the scrabble game so it'll be one of his unforgettable memories. *shrug*. madness...

life goes on here

so it was five days before christmas, and the day after i finished all my exams. two weeks of holiday in front of me. you just couldn't ask for anything better than that. finally, yesterday i got the chance to kick my lazy ass out of the room, and decided to have some walk around downtown. yet it's a perfect instance to have some treat for myself, and just getting away from the house. you'd really want to do that, especially after some fight between your landlord and his eighty-something mother as your wake-up alarm early in the morning for two days in a row (three if you count this morning too). *grunt grunt*.

downtown was full alright. most of the stores are having their annual pre-christmas sales, and people just won't let this option passing by. neither do i. well, although i still have about three books at home that i haven't even started to read, i managed to buy another two. *sigh*. you are not a stranger here by adam haslett and chuck palahniuk's lullaby. i was just couldn't resist. i know the sale wasn't much, just around 20%, but hey, i got plenty of free times waiting to be wasted, and i'm pretty sure i won't have this kind of luxury after new year. so i bought myself those books, and one new sweater, not because i couldn't control myself (at least partly) but because i actually need one. it's getting colder everyday here (today's the first day of winter), and i barely have a proper sweater. that should be a good excuse, i guess. *grin*. some end-of-the-year indulgence won't do any harm, right?

Victoria Parliament Building at night boy, people were like crazy. i've never seen downtown as full as yesterday, not even the day before thanksgiving and halloween, as far as i remember. and it's only what, five days before christmas? wonder what it'd look like on the 24th. anyway, after treating myself, i decided to get caffeinated for a break. went to serious coffee, which i haven't tried yet even though i've passed it loads of time before. cozy place, great coffee (they are serious!), surprisingly reasonable prices when you compare it with starbucks, and a little bit of jazz and soul to lighten up the day, which was quite rewarding, especially after a whole day listened to christmas-themed songs those stores had been playing. and i finally can continue to read the book that i've been reading now, william golding's lord of the flies, which had been officially abandoned for the last one month thanks to those bloody assignments and exams. one latte, an espresso and 74 pages later, i got out and wandered around, encountered all kinds of people (from the homeless, drunken and stoned brats to the hip and groovin' chicks ready to have some party) and i found myself strolled through a part of downtown that i've never been to. which was quite surprising, remembering how many times i'd been to downtown. not bad, i was getting to know this city a little bit better.

as midnight approached, you could see the pubs and clubs were getting fuller, people tried to have some fun on the last saturday night before christmas. it was fun alright. i had a good time myself. so i went home by bus, thinking about all the boring stuff needed to be done the day after (read: today): grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning my room, *groan groan*. well, you just can't expect everything at once. and yeah, just like what they said, life goes on here.

interpretation of a dream

yesterday was quite a shock to me. for the first time since god-knows-when, i had a dream in my sleep. i hardly dream during my sleeps at night (is that a sign of lack of imagination?), but i have come to realize that everytime i did, it was always distinctive than others, obscure, bizzare and yet-to-be-demystified. and i always (well, almost), remember the vivid details of each of it, probably because i rarely dream and each of them are peculiar. one dream that won't go from my mind until this very moment was the one when i got killed by my own driver, if i'm not mistaken happened 4 years ago, i can blatantly tell you right now all the details of that dream: vibrant, dark and sad.

anyway, if you have read my previous posting, by now you understand that i had a serious trouble of sleeping for more than 2 weeks. and finally, yesterday, after i finished my sociology exam, i had an 11 and a half hour sleep. you know, when you have had a sleeping trouble for a long time, a mad stress and killer exams ruining your life, you would expect to have a long, peaceful kinda sleep as a reward. well, i got the 'long' part, but not quite the'peaceful' part. and yes, you're guessing is right, i was dead again yesterday.

this time, instead of swinged 7 times in the air, flew hard, landed on a full-of-glasses surface, and choked to death by my own driver just like the last time, my death was caused by an even more peculiar incident. there i was, walking with 2 of somewhat-looks-like-my-friend-but-they're-actually-not in a strange-yet-familiar building, until we came into a long, abandoned hall which somehow we knew that we shouldn't walk through it. but we were already inside, so we walked through it and tried to find the elevator that again, somehow, we knew was there. so i pushed the 'down' button, we waited for several seconds and when the elevator was opened, i came in. yes, 'i', not 'we'. why? because i was then realized the 2 of them were gone. instead, i was now escorted with a very repulsive dog, wherever it came from, and the elevator went down. it was cold. i wanted to go to a particular floor (i couldn't remember what number) but the elevator kept going down, down, and down, until it passed the ground floor. i was scared because it kept going down unstoppable, so i pushed the 'up' button hoping that it would going up instead. it did, and it wouldn't stop either. i was so scared (and the dog was still wth me, right now god-knows-how it's in my hand), that i pushed the 'down' button again, and it still didn't stop on the floor that i wanted. horrified, i pushed the up button again and this process of going up and down was repeated for at least 7 times (what is it with number 7??), until i have a thought: if i keep pushing hard the highest floor's button, maybe the elevator would keep going up so it would fall to the ground, and i can go to the particular floor using the stairs. so i pushed the button really hard, prayed and hoping that my life would be safed and i can go out. and it was a success. the elevator didn't stop on the highest floor, it crashed the ceiling and it flew to the air, and fell to the ground after somewhat like forever. it landed perfectly on the ground, just about 100 paces in front of the building (which then i realized was very high). i was so relieved that i could survive, i stepped outside the elevator and ran furiously into the building, naked (yes, i really didn't understand why, and don't ask me what happened with the dog), found the stairs and i went up through the stairs until i reached the floor that had caused me trouble. there were hundreds of people, blank-faced, some of them were mourning, and none seemed like realizing i was there, even though i was right in front of them, standing there naked. eventually i recognized some faces, my family, my friends, and the 2 guys that were with me in the beginning of the dream, all of them were there. i was stunned breathless. and yes, once again you're guessing is right, it was my memorial service. i was dead due to a crushed elevator, and they found my body in pieces. the naked me? well, i guess that would be my soul.

i woke up with a terrible sweat (fyi the temperature was 4 degree outside), and i almost lost my breath, since i was very exhausted. now that, my friend, was terrifying. could it actually mean something? or was it just my brain trying to make sense of all the psychosis that had happened in my real life? i don't usually believe in superstitions, but i also don't think that dreaming of your own death more than once is healthy.

this is Our World, guys!

a little reminder for everyone of what kind of world are we living in:

+ the 225 richest individuals have wealth that totals the total annual income of the poorest 47 per cent of the world's population

+ the assets of the three richest people in the world are greater than the combined assets of the 49 less-developed countries

+ the consumption rate of the richest 20 per cent of countries is 16 times that of the poorest 20 per cent

+ in Canada the average life expectancy is just over 79 years; in Sierra Leone it is just under 35 years

+ Wal-Mart, ExxonMobile, Ford Motor and DaimlerChrysler rank 25th to 28th respectively on the world's national economies comparison as measured by GDP with corporate sales figures, all with annual sales greater than Poland, Norway and Indonesia's GDPs, which rank 29th to 31st

Dyssomnia: sleep disorder

fact #1: 30% of Canadians suffers from some degree of insomnia

fact #2: 50% of those are in severe conditions

fact #3: the potential causes of facts no. 1 and 2 include stress, emotional problems, alcohol and other drug use, medical problems, excessive exhaustion, etc.

fact #4: i'm not canadian, but i'm definitely one of those students mentioned in the article below. yes, i'm having a serious sleep deprivation. mind you, this is the exam period. and i'm writing this instead of studying. procrastination, that's all i'm good at. i've found myself cannot sleep whatsoever for the last 2 weeks at night, even though my mind's keep telling me to sleep, my body and soul keep screaming and begging for some good night rest. the result? black eyesacks below my eyes decorating my already messed-up face and never-ending sleepiness during the day (and i still couldn't succeed to take some nap) followed by weaker body and tired all the time.

help me. give me some recommendations. anything.

:: fact no. 1, 2 and 3 are from some psychology lesson ::

Sleep deprivation leads to sickness, depression

As the semester ends and finals begin, students are working more and sleeping less.

Most studies recommend eight hours of sleep as a healthy amount, meaning students are racking up huge sleep deficits this time of year.

UVic student Chelsea Henschel averaged 4.5 hours of sleep per night because of a full schedule which forced her to begin her homework at 10 p.m. almost every evening. "I made myself stay up late just to finish my homework," she said.

As a result Henschel, fell sick and became mentally exhausted.

Henschel's story is not unique among student populations. Dr. William Dyson, director of UVic Health Services, points out that some of these problems stem from student living environments that are "not always conducive to sleep."

According to Dr. Dyson and Health Services head nurse Donna Denman, it is important when students plan their course and work schedule to also account for socializing. She adds students should also realize they need to plan time for being sick.

Wake Up!
A sleeping disturbance is best cured with a good night's sleep, not self-medication, according to UVic Health Services.

Chronic insomnia can lead to psychiatric side effects including depression, anxiety and paranoia. "Depression is the most serious and most common illness resulting from sleep deprivation. Anxiety attacks may become frequent occurrences and paranoid thoughts include believing things are worse than they actually are or that people are against that individual," said Dyson.

But insomnia does not always show itself in such extreme forms. Students may simply find themselves suffering from an extended cold or having difficulty concentrating in class.

Some students are self-medicating to ward off sleeping disorders but according to Dr. Dyson, this is not the best method to cure insomnia.

"Sometimes one good night of sleep can correct a sleeping disturbance, and in that case a doctor may prescribe a mild relaxant, but the best solution lays in sorting out your lifestyle," said Dyson.

Another short-term method of relief is massage therapy, which is becoming more popular because it produces relaxation without medication.

history 101: the story of acid jazz

[+] Who coined the phrase Acid Jazz?

The term was originally coined by DJ Gilles Peterson at one of Nicky Holloway's Special Branch gigs at the Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford in late 1987.
Nicky's Special Branch gigs had already been going for 2 or 3 years and
attracted both suburban dwellers and a London crowd. As well as up and
coming guest DJs like Gilles Peterson and Chris Bangs, Nicky decorated his
clubs with slide shows on the walls. At one particular gig just as Gilles
and Chris were about to start their set of funky jazz, soul and latin
Gilles looked up at the visuals and pronounced 'acid jazz'. As simple as
that - no rhyme or reason for it - just an off-the-cuff remark

[+] What was the club scene like at the time?

London and the suburbs had various different scenes at the time - rare
groove, house, jazz dance and two step soul. The acid jazzers embraced the
afro-american music of all these other scenes and began to put their own
twist on the music.

[+] How did Acid Jazz Records come about?

Eddie Piller was the manager of James Taylor Quartet - the hottest act on
the acid jazz circuit at the time - when he met Gilles Peterson at one of the Special Branch club nights and subsequently went on to become part of Gilles’ circle, answering phones on his Mad On Jazz programme, doing warm-up slots at his Wag nights and so on. Eventually the duo decided to start up a label to release acts from the burgeoning acid jazz scene.

[+] What was the first release on Acid Jazz?

The first release was Galliano's `Frederick Lies Still' a take on Curtis
Mayfield's `Freddie's Dead' - an ever popular track on the rare groove
scene. It was officially released in June 1988, 500 7” dinked middle copies having previously been sold by hand from November 1987.

[+] How did word spread about Acid Jazz?

A combination of a very healthy club scene, Gilles's Tuesday night radio
show on GLR and the support of enthusiastic journalists like Dave
Swindells at Time Out helped spread the word about the scene. There were
also a lot of bands that would come and play at the club nights - bands
like the James Taylor Quartet, the Jazz Warriors, Mark Murphy, Courtney
Pine and so on - all of which helped energise the scene. It would be wrong
though to think that clubbers were part of a scene known as `acid jazz' -
at the time (as is the case with so many musical movements) clubbers were
just into a certain mix of music and found it at club nights like Nicky
Holloway's Special Branch and Gilles Peterson's and Chris Bang's Cock
Happy.

The worldwide use of the phrase acid jazz was still some way away.

[+] Why did `acid jazz' become so popular?

There's a whole host of reasons as to why acid jazz was such a lengthy and
successful scene and why acid jazz compilations still sell so well today.
First up there were a lot of talented people in the scene - the djs we've
mentioned, Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller whose excellent ears for music
allied with an ability to move fast and take risks brought forward a whole
host of talented musicians and producers - many of whom have continued to
be successful to this day. Additionally we should mention the friendly
inclusive nature of the scene which attracted both men and women, whites
and blacks, Londoners and suburbanites and people from working and middle
class backgrounds. Lastly, as we've mentioned before, the unique mix of
afro-american music drew people from many other scenes such as mod, rare
groove, jazz dance, two-step and so on.

[+] Was acid jazz largely a London and the home counties scene?

Not at all. Acid Jazz quickly spread around the country with DJs like Russ
Dewbury in Brighton and Baz Fe Jazz in Birmingham.
